Brrr – It’s Cold Outside!

No question about it, winters in Toronto can get pretty chilly. In fact, they can get downright cold. It’s no problem for most people, as all they have to do is layer up with some sweaters and coats. But what about those poor pipes that are outside your home or in the basement or garage?

The constant freezing and thawing can damage pipes to the point of bursting. And once a pipe bursts, water can be flowing everywhere – on your carpeting, floors, into walls, and into electrical outlets. Left unchecked, you’re looking at some major damage to your home. Not to mention mold, mildew and other problems that come from water damage. The pipes you need to worry about most are those that are in contact with cold – like pipes outside, in attics and in basements that aren’t heated.

What can you do to minimize the risk? If you find that you have a pipe that burst, immediately shut off the main water valve to your home. (It’s usually located near your water meter where the main line enters into your home). If you turn on a faucet and no water is coming out, call Plumber Toronto immediately. Don’t wait until the pipes thaw, because it may be too late.

And to help prevent the problems before they happen, prepare your pipes before the winter cold comes. Wrap pipes with insulation in the attic or basement. Turn off the valves to outdoor pipes, and keep them open so whatever water remains in them drains out. By following these basic tips, you’ll end up saving yourself some serious money this winter!
